Setting up Discounts for your online shop

The discount management system within ekmPowershop allows you to offer discounts to your customers. The system is very comprehensive and allows you to offer all kinds of discounts including...
  • Coupon Codes
  • Buy X get X Free
  • Percentage discount on specific days
  • Order X many products and save X amount of money
  • Repeat Customers
  • Specific Products Ordered - Buy this, get this free
  • Cart Value - Spend more than X and get this reward
... and many more! With the ekmPowershop discount system the amount of discounts and setup of these discounts is almost unlimited.

How the discount system works

The discount system within ekmPowershop works on a trigger and reward basis. In order for a customer to get a discount reward (such as money off) they must first trigger and therefore active the discount (such as ordering a certain product).

For example you may have a discount such as 'Free Delivery if you spend more than £100'. In this example the customer would need to add products into the shopping cart totalling £100 to trigger the discount, once the discount has been triggered the reward would be that the delivery fee would be made free.

Creating discounts is relatively easy as the system will talk you through it step by step and so our advice is to have a go and start creating discounts and try them out to see what the results are.

Tutorial: Creating a simple 'Free Delivery if you spend more than X pounds'. discount

The easiest way to get used to the discount system is to actually create a discount, here we will guide you through the process of creating a simple discount such as the one mentioned above... 'Free Delivery if you spend more than £100'.
  1. Add the Discount
Go to 'Your Account' and go into 'Settings > Discount Management' and Click the 'Add' button to add a new discount to your shop.

  2. Discount Name
This is where you need to give a name for your discount, it should be something that describes the discount as this will be displayed to the customer if it is triggered.

  3. Discount Description
Again this need to explain the discount to the customer, it only need to be short but it should explain what the offer is all about. For example...

  4. Discount Start and End Date
You can specify when this discount actually starts and ends. This is really useful as it enables you to active and disable a discount without you having to physically log in and start/stop it and so you could setup discounts which activated during holiday periods for example. In this tutorial just accept the default values as they will mean the discount is active right away.

  5. Can this Discount be used in Conjunction with other discounts?
Here you can specify if this discount can be used alongside other discounts. You need to be very careful with this as if you have several discounts which all get triggered at the same time they can multiply each other and give a very large discount. For example a discount might be triggered with gives 10% off the total, and then another discount might be triggered which gives a further 10% off the already discounted amount. In most cases you will probably want to select NO, so make sure you have thought out any issues that may arise if you enable a discount to run in conjunction with others. In this tutorial just select 'NO'.

  6. Discount Trigger Selection
This is where you select what the trigger is for this discount and you can select from the following options...

    Discount System - Stage 6

... in this tutorial we want to offer a discount if the customer spends more than £100 so we need to select 'Cart Value'.

  7. Trigger Amount
We have already told the system that the trigger is when the customer cart value hits a certain amount, it is here where we can actually specify what the amount actually is. The discount can be triggered if the cart subtotal is more or less than a financial amount. In this tutorial select 'MORE' than '£100' and click next.

  8. Does this discount require a coupon?
Quite frequently shop owners may require that a discount is only available to those customers who have a coupon code which they may have received from a previous order, magazine advert, business card, etc... If this is one of these kind of discounts which can only be received if you have such a code then you would select yes here. In our tutorial case however we should select 'NO'.

  9. Discount Reward Selection
This is where you select the reward for triggering this discount, you can select from the following options...

    Discount System - Stage 9

... in this tutorial select Free Delivery as this is the discount reward we wish to offer.

  10. Discount Restrictions
Most discounts will have restrictions in place, and this tutorial example is a good example. We wish to offer free delivery but only to those customers in the UK as to offer free worldwide delivery may be too expensive for us at the moment. You can select to restrict the discount via Countries and Delivery Options. In this tutorial we need to select all the countries that we do not want to have access to the discount so click the box at the top of the window to select all the countries and then scroll through the list and un-tick the United Kingdom. If you have a few delivery options, for example First Class, Next Day, etc. You may wish to not allow free delivery if they choose anything other than standard delivery also. In this example we are happy to accept any delivery options however so just click next.

  11. Discount Presentation & Promotion
This final section allows you to set where your discount is actually shown to your customer, for example do you want it to be highlighted on the cart page so your customers know they have active the discount? In most cases you will want to let them know everywhere possible. In our example just ensure that the discount is set to be displayed in the shopping cart and click next.

  12. All Done
The discount is now added. And if you click the 'Done' button you will see the discount within the discount management section. Here you can stop the discount, re-active the discount, delete the discount, edit the discount and set the discounts priority. Now the discount has been added go to 'View Shop' and trigger your discount by adding more than £100 worth of products to your cart.
