Setting up a discount to offer a percentage off specific products
One of the most common discounts that shops like to offer is a percentage off specific products.
So for example, you may be able to offer 10% off a certain range or brand of products, but you don’t want the discount to apply to the other products that a customer may add to their basket.
A common mistake when setting this discount up is to set the trigger as “specific products ordered”, and the reward as “percentage off specific products”. The problem with setting it up this way is that there are essentially two triggers of “specific products”, and so the system will error and the discount will not be applied correctly. The discount system works on the basis of one trigger, one reward.
To get this discount to work correctly, you will need to choose a different trigger to specific products bought.
The usual way to do this is to set the trigger as being a cart value of £0.00, or a coupon, and then the reward to be “percentage off specific products”.
If the trigger is set to be the cart value of £0.00, then the discount is essentially always active, but because the reward is for specific products, then the discount will only be applied those specific products that you have selected.
If the trigger is set to be a coupon, then the customer must enter the coupon code that you have provided them with before the discount will be activated. This is useful is you are offering the discount to customers who have signed up for a mailing list, as an example, as you can mail all of these customers saying “you can have 10% off if you enter this code on the checkout page”.
