Product Variants
When adding your products, you may find that you wish to have certain variations of that product. For example, you may be selling a shirt that is available in various sizes and various colours. Not only may you have these two variants, but you might have differing stock levels of each variant. To configure this, you would make use of our powerful "Product Variants" tool.
If you follow the below example, we will show you how to add two product variants and how to edit the various parameters that are associated with it:
When editing a product, you will see the "Product Variants" expansion menu as illustrated below:
Clicking Add New Variant" will allow you to set the new variant you wish to add. For example, you would enter "Size" in the following prompt:
When you have added your variant, you will then be taken back to the main product editing page which will now show the variant you have just added. Now click the "edit" button as illustrated below:
You will then see a prompt that allows you to set the variant choices or rename the variant title itself - or even delete the whole variant including any choices associated with it. You can also set the order in which choices are presented to your customers. Primarily though, this is where you enter the sizes of your item, for example "small", "medium" and "large ". Simply click the "add" button after entering your size and then repeat the process until all sizes are entered:
Once they are all entered correctly, click "Done".
Now you will see in your product editing page the following data:
As you can see, this table is where you set the stock level, product code, price and RRP for each variant choice. For example your larger items may be more expensive, or you may have more of the larger items in stock than the smaller items - all of which can be set within this table. The "default" item, set using the bullet points, is also the one that will be displayed to the customer when they first view the product.
You now need to repeat this process so you have a second product variant by clicking the "Add New Variant" when viewing the main product editing page. For this second variant example, we will call it "Colour" and will set "red", "blue" and "green" as the variant choices. Once you have done this by repeating the above steps, you will see the following table layout:
As you can see, there are now multiple variant choices; a combination of both sizes and colours whereby each product, i.e. a "small blue" item or a "large red" item can have their own stock levels and prices set accordingly.
Whilst we can modify most of the variant attriburtes on the main edit product page, this isn't everything. If you click edit next to any of the variants in the yellow table you are taken to a further page where we can edit the delivery costs and images.
Assigning a different image to the variant is exactly the same as assigning the main images, simply click the main image button, select to upload a new image or use an existing image and select the image as normal. Once this has been updated when your customers change the dropdown options on the product page then the image will update to show a different, useful if you offer items in different colours for example.
You now simply need to repeat this process on all of the items that require "variants" to be set within them. You can also bulk amend various parameters within your products and their variants by referring to the Stock Control Manager guide.
Important Note: It is important not to become confused between the differences of "product variants" and "product options". The variants are literally variations of the product, meaning you will most likely have different colours and stock levels of such product variations of that particular item; whereas a product option is simply an optional element that can be assigned to the product as a whole - such as whether you want the item gift wrapping which would offer the choices of "yes" or "no". Or perhaps you would like the product engraved with some text, meaning a text box product option will be visible no matter which variant is selected by the potential customer. A guide on how to implement "product options" can be found be viewing the Product Options guide.
It is not possible to have different product options within each product variant, just like it is not possible to have different product descriptions within each product variant.
Please note that at the moment product variants do not work with the bulk price discount option and also with our old CSV import/Export system
